Digital Mobile Radio, a communications Standard for Public Transport

This paper discusses the benefits of adopting the new European Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) standard for public transport operations. In recent times ETSI has published the standard ETSI TR 102-361 which describes a progressive structure, as well as a range of services that can be delivered over a long-range wireless carrier.

Interestingly, much of the DMR standard draws and expands on the MPT1327 trunked radio standard which has been well tried and tested in transport systems around the world.

However this still leaves the question: does DMR offer a communications standard suitable for Intelligent Transport Solutions projects in public transport for projects being considered now?

This paper looks at the benefits of the standard and how it can deliver effective solutions which address real business issues. Could DMR be the superior standard for public transport?
